Video NSW govt amendments ‘pervert’ the abortion bill1:59

Australia’s peak medical body has slammed amendments being moved by NSW government ministers to a bill intended to decriminalise abortion. The alterations would force women seeking an abortion after 22 weeks of pregnancy to go to a minister-approved hospital with the consent of a hospital advisory committee. Under the original bill, women pregnant for up to 22 weeks could have an abortion with the approval of a single doctor, but beyond that point, they would have to arrange the procedure with approval from two doctors. Australian Medical Association NSW said in a statement “these amendments go against the spirit in which the bill was introduced — in fact, they are a perversion of it.” “If voted in, they would mean access to abortion in NSW would become very restrictive by Australian standards.” Image: Getty
