'Attack on feminism': Andrew Nolch on why he defaced Eurydice Dixon's memorial

“I was upset, and I want to make this clear, this was not a personal attack at all...this was purely an attack on feminism, on mainstream media for hijacking a vaccine-causing issue and turning it into a men are bad, women’s rights issue,” he told The Age.

Mr Nolch repeatedly cited the discredited theory that vaccines caused autism.

He said it was worth causing hurt in order to get his message across. He also said that he had no diagnosed mental illness.

There is a strong consensus within the scientific community that vaccines don't cause autism, a position held by health authorities around the world and backed by several large reputable studies.

Though police said Mr Nolch was 31, he said he was actually 29.

Mr Nolch hosted a late night comedy show on Channel 31 called The Kink, which no longer airs on television, as well as a podcast about conspiracy theories and another about Scientology.

He said he stopped doing stand-up more than a year ago because his anti-vaccination stance was not welcomed in the comedic community.

He now describes himself as an anti-vaccination activist and independent Scientologist.

Mr Nolch is known to friends of Ms Dixon.

Other comedians told The Age that their peers would be shocked to learn that a member of the local comedy scene had been charged over the graffiti.

Mr Nolch, who is on bail, will face court in August charged with criminal damage, offensive behaviour and marking offensive graffiti.

He said he did not plan to fight the charges.

Jaymes Todd, 19, has been charged with Ms Dixon's rape and murder.
