Mother's death prompts Queensland flu warning

The death of a mother-of-three from a flu-related illness so early in the season has prompted health officials to issue a reminder of how serious the viral disease can be.

Jacinta Foulds, 35, died in Toowoomba Hospital, west of Brisbane, on Tuesday night from secondary infections, about two weeks after coming down with the illness.

Her family said it has been rocked by her death.

"This is the hardest post I have ever had to do," Mrs Foulds' husband Daniel posted on Facebook.

"My world has been rocked. I said goodbye to my best friend and soul mate.

"It’s a very tough moment, so rather than fielding phone calls and messages, I’m putting it up so all my friends and family can see.

"My beautiful wife lost her fight as she was extremely sick with Influenza A.

"As a result, she caught a secondary infection as well as pneumonia and it was too much for her body to handle. She fought hard all the way to the end, as expected from the Jacinta we all know.

"I’m really struggling and am trying to hold it together for my three kids. Jacinta Foulds, taken too soon and forever in my heart and soul, RIP my true love."

Mr Foulds also pleaded with Queenslanders to get vaccinated.

"Me and my kids will be getting the flu shot forever," he told ABC News.

"If you’re sick, go to the doctor, if it’s longer than two days and you don’t feel right, just go to the doctor because it’s not a joke, this stuff kills.

"We’re just an average family and I’ve lost my soul mate and the mother of my children."

Health officials said it was rare, but severe complications can happen for people aged under 50 who are diagnosed with influenza.

It is not too late to be vaccinated before the peak of the flu season in mid-August and September, said Darling Downs Health boss Dr Martin Byrne.

He said other preventive measures included good hand hygiene, cough etiquette and staying away from work or school if you are unwell.

People most at risk from the flu include infants, the elderly, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, those with chronic conditions and pregnant women.

A GoFundMe campaign to support Mr Foulds and the couple's three children has raised more than $10,000 in less than 24 hours.
